Moving files in Windows - TechnologyInstructions.com

Windows XP | Windows 95 / 98 / ME

WARNING: Moving files and or folders can cause your computer not to work properly if the files are needed to run a program.  DO NOT MOVE FILES unless you are sure you know what your doing.

Examples of files you may be able to move safely: 

  • Photo's that you saved on your computer
  • Documents that you created and saved on your computer
  • Program files that you downloaded and saved on your computer

It's not a good idea to move any files or folders that is not in your My Documents folder. Move files and folders at your own risk, we are not responsible for any damage to your computer in any way.  We can not and will not help you correct any problems that you encounter from moving files or folders on your computer.

In Windows XP

  1. Open the folder you want to move the files or folders from, on your computer
  2. Click the file or folder once so that it turns blue.  To move more than one file at a time, find the next file, hold down the Ctrl key, and click the other file you want to move with the first one you selected. Repeat the last sentence to add more.  If you want to move all of the files in that folder, click EDIT, SELECT ALL, all files will turn blue. If you want to move several listed in a row or in order, click the first file, hold down the shift key and click the last file, all files between the first click and the last click will turn blue.
  3. On the left side, click "Move this file or folder"
  4. Navigate to where you want the files / folders copied to, click it once so it turns blue
  5. Click "Move"

That's all it takes.  Now that file and/or folder is now in it's new location.

In Other Window Versions

  1. Find the files or folders on your computer
  2. Click the file or folder once so that it turns blue.  To move more than one file at a time, find the next file, hold down the Ctrl key, and click the other file you want to move with the first one you selected. Repeat the last sentence to add more.  If you want to move all of the files in that folder, click EDIT, SELECT ALL, all files will turn blue. If you want to move several listed in a row or in order, click the first file, hold down the shift key and click the last file, all files between the first click and the last click will turn blue.
  3. On the left side, click "Move this file or folder"
  4. Click EDIT, MOVE TO FOLDER
  5. Navigate to where you want the files or folders moved to, click the folder to turn it blue
  6. Click "Move" or "OK"

You're done.  The files or folders are now in it's new location.
