Rear Window Removal - Volvo 850

These instructions will guide you through the process of removing the rear windows of the Volvo 850. I remove the windows when I tint them. It was a little harder than I thought it would be, they did not want to come out once they were totally loose. I had to take the door fame window seal loose and remove it to get the window out. Took me about 20 minutes to get it out about 30 minutes to get it back in.

Tools Needed:

T-25 driver T-30 driver
T-15 driver Small flash light
Long nose pliers Flat tip screw driver

Instructions:

  1. Open the door.

  2. Remove the speaker grill cover, it simply pulls off. Make sure you pull it off straight so you do not break any clips.

  3. Remove the 2 screws that hold the panel to the door. One of them is at 10 o'clock and the other is recessed. T-25

  4. Pull the door insert out with your fingers, this will expose the screw behind it.

  5. Remove the screw behind that panel. I believe it is a T-30.

  6. Pull off the door handle.

  7. Remove the 3 or 4 screws from the bottom edge of the door panel. T-25 and one of them is a T-15.

  8. Work the door panel off the door, pull the bottom out a little then lift it up. It has a couple of clips that hooks it against the door and you will have to lift if over the handle and lock pin. Then hold it there for the next 2 steps.

  9. When the panel is pulled away from the door, remove the two access covers.

  10. Once the covers are removed, roll the window down to see the clips that hold the window in.

  11. Unplug the window switch, speaker wire, and door warning light on the trailing edge of the door panel.

  12. Remove the exterior window seal for the bottom of the glass. It simply lifts out (try not to bend it).

  13. Pull the clips that lock the window lifts in place.

  14. Pop the arms loose from the plastic track guides. Figure out a way to hold the window guides stationary and force the lifts out.
WARNING: These lifts have a ball join that clip into the track guides. Do not apply to much twisting or pushing pressure on them because you may break the window. I used long nose hooked pliers to wedge them out of the tracks. I did break the glass on a Saturn that I was trying to get out so it is possible to break the glass.
NOTE: Be prepared to hold the window in place so it does not fall down in the door once the lift arms are released.

  15. Once the lifts are released, let the window rest in the door.

  16. Remove the door seal panel. I think it is a T-15.

  17. Remove the screw that secures the door seal in place.

  18. Work the door seal out of the door frame.

  19. Work the window out of the door.
